GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women’s tennis team has received the 2022 Division I Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Region Community Service Award, as announced this week by the ITA.
The honor is given annually to the team in the Carolina Region which does the most to give back to the community. This year’s award is the first in the history of the Paladin women’s tennis program.
Since Covid-19 emerged in the spring of 2020, Furman has been creative in its attempts to give back, and this year the Paladins opted to host a series of free tennis clinics. Through the team’s strategic partnership with Neighborhood Focus, a bilingual community center in Greenville, and additional groups surrounding Furman, the Paladins logged over 400 hours of community service by offering clinics for community members of various tennis levels and backgrounds.
“Finding ways to give back to others and our community is something that our student-athletes thoroughly enjoy,” said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. “We do that in a variety of ways, but this year we put a special emphasis on trying to connect more young people with the game of tennis. We had a great time with the series of free clinics we have hosted so far and are looking forward to continuing this tradition in the future as we build new relationships in the years to come!”
