SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its May athletes of the month Wednesday, highlighting excellence among four student-athletes across two sports during the month.
 
BASEBALL
Player
Pres Cavenaugh, UNCG, So., OF, Charlotte, N.C.

• Hit .429, slugged .679 and had a .489 on-base percentage in May, collecting 36 hits and drawing eight walks in posting 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored
• Eleven of his 36 hits went for extra bases, including four home runs, five doubles and two triples
• Had multiple hits in 12 of his 19 games in the month
• Earned SoCon Baseball Player of the Week honors on May 16 after batting .647 and scoring nine total runs on 11 hits with two home runs, one double and 10 RBIs in games against Coastal Carolina and ETSU
• Named to the SoCon All-Tournament team after helping the Spartans to the title, recording UNCG's only grand slam of the year in a 16-5 win over Mercer and hitting an RBI walk-off double against The Citadel to cap a four-run ninth-inning rally in a 7-6 win

Pitcher
Zebby Matthews, Western Carolina, Jr., RHP, Cullowhee, N.C.

• Went 3-0 with one save and a 0.75 ERA in May, striking out 46 with just seven walks in 36 innings of work over seven appearances
• Held the opposition to a .209 batting average and 28 base hits, just eight of which went for extra bases
• Earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors on May 9 after he allowed one run and struck out 12 batters en route to earning a win and a save in the Catamounts' series against Mercer
• Leads the league in batters struck out (122) and batters struck out looking (46) and struck out at least five in each of his monthly appearances, including nine in his win against VMI on May 1
• Recorded a win in relief over VMI in the SoCon Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases

SOFTBALL
Player
Reagan Armour, Chattanooga, So., DP, Ringgold, Ga.

• Hit .447, slugged 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .448 to lead Chattanooga to an 8-3 record in May
• Had 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored, with 10 of her 17 hits going for extra bases, including four doubles, a triple and five home runs
• Hit .500 with a 1.214 slugging percentage at the SoCon Softball Championship, helping the Mocs win their 15^th title
• Homered in consecutive games against Western Carolina to close the regular season, including a four-hit, five-RBI day to on May 8 en route to SoCon Player of the Week honors
• Turned in the first three-homer game in SoCon Championship history, driving in five runs in the title game as Chattanooga knocked off top-seeded UNCG

Pitcher
Brooke Parrott, Chattanooga, Jr., RHP, Harrison, Tenn.

• Went 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA in May, with her only two losses coming to No. 7 Alabama in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional
• Allowed just 24 hits and 18 walks and struck out 24 in 44 1/3 innings of work
• Allowed just three hits and pitched 7 2/3 innings of Chattanooga’s 1-0, eight-inning win over Murray State for UTC’s first NCAA tournament win since 2011
• Named the Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon Softball Championship after going 4-0 with a 1.12 ERA in helping the Mocs to the title
• Tossed 10 innings and allowed just one earned run in a 3-2 win against Western Carolina and threw a three-hit shutout against Samford in the SoCon Championship
