Furman's Adams, Schoppe selected for NCAA tournament

Adams will play in singles, both in doubles competition

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe have been selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship, which will be held May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, after the conclusion of the team championship.

A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Adams is one of 64 singles players who will compete at the tournament. She earned the Southern Conference’s automatic singles bid and is making her second individual championship appearance after competing in the doubles portion of the tournament last season.

The 2022 SoCon Player of the Year, Adams, who ranks 38th nationally, was named to the All-SoCon first team for singles and doubles after posting a 19-5 overall singles record and perfect 7-0 mark versus league opponents. She boasts four spring wins over ranked opponents, including a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Margarita Skriabina of Texas Tech, who was ranked 16th at the time of the match.

Schoppe, who hails from Stuart, Florida, will team up with Adams in the national doubles championship.  The 34th-ranked Paladin duo, which also earned the league’s automatic bid, is one of 32 doubles teams that will compete for the title. Schoppe and Adams, who ranked as high as 23rd nationally this spring, recorded a 19-4 overall record and 6-0 mark versus league opponents and recorded two ranked wins.

At last season’s championship, Adams and Katarina Kozarov claimed the program’s first NCAA doubles win, defeating No. 11 Ally Bojczuk and Julia Lilien of Notre Dame, 7-6(6), 6-3.

“We take great pride in representing Furman on the national stage, and we are thrilled to have our team and Julia and Ellie in the NCAA tournament,” said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. “These players have had a fantastic season, and we are excited to see how far they can go!”

Pairings for the competition will be announced at a later date. All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
