UR’s Young, Mercer’s Wood named Players of the Week

Final weekly awards of the season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond’s Dalton Young and Mercer’s Ashton Wood have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games April 26 to May 2. The awards are selected by the league office and are the final ones of the season.

Young scored seven points in Richmond’s 14-12 win over VMI to close the regular season Saturday. The junior attackman from Chantilly, Virginia, scored three goals and dished off four assists to become just the eighth player in program history to reach the 100-point mark for his career, finishing the contest at 105. Young also matched his season high with four ground balls. He currently ranks 15th in SoCon history in points and tied for ninth in points per game (3.50).

Wood earned the nod on the defensive side after going 20-for-27 on faceoffs Saturday in a season-ending 14-11 win over High Point, the Bears’ first over the Panthers since 2017. The senior from Saint Augustine, Florida, whose 20 faceoffs wins were his second-most this season, also matched his season high with two goals scored, on just two shots taken. Wood is the SoCon’s career leader in ground balls (363), ground balls per game (9.07), faceoff wins (633) and faceoff winning percentage (.645).

Richmond (9-4, 4-1 SoCon), which is ranked No. 17 in the USILA/Dynamic Men’s Coaches Division I Poll and Inside Lacrosse poll and No. 18 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll, faces tournament host High Point (7-7, 2-3) in the semifinals of the SoCon Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Thursday at 8 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s title game. Mercer (5-10, 2-3) has completed its season.
