GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman’s Anna Morgan was named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America second team, as announced Thursday by the WGCA.
Morgan, a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, finished tied for ninth Monday at the NCAA Championship, becoming the seventh Paladin player to record a top-10 finish in the history of the event. She qualified for the national championship after firing a final-round 67, the sixth-best women’s collegiate round at Karsten Creek, to finish fifth at the NCAA Stillwater Regional and advance in the top individual spot at the regional.
The 2022 Southern Conference Player of the Year, she led the league with a 72.25 stroke average over 36 rounds this season. A two-time All-SoCon selection and 2021 SoCon Freshman of the Year honoree, she tallied seven top-five finishes in 2021-22 and tied for 21st at the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Morgan, who currently ranks 29th nationally, has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open, which will be contested in June, and will compete on the U.S. Team in the Arnold Palmer Cup, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, in July.
“I am super excited to have been named a second-team All-American,” said Morgan. “I am so glad to see that my hard work has paid off and join a talented group of golfers named All-Americans.”
Morgan’s honor is the 23rd WGCA All-America citation awarded to members of the Furman women’s golf team since Greenville’s own Sherri Turner won the program’s first All-America award in 1979.
“I am so very proud of Anna for earning All-America second-team honors,” said Furman head coach Jeff Hull. “Her season, especially this spring, is very deserving of this. With this accolade, she joins a very elite list of Furman women’s golfers to have earned this distinction.”
The criteria used to determine the WGCA All-American teams include head-to-head competition, comparison with common opponents, scoring average, place finishes in regular-season events and tournament wins, and strength of schedule. Twelve athletes were named to the first team, while 11 athletes comprised the second team. In addition, 17 honorable mention All-America citations were given.
