Furman to face Old Dominion in NCAA first round

Paladins are No. 3 seed in Durham, N.C., regional

GREENVILLE, S.C. – No. 36 Furman will face No. 31 Old Dominion in Durham, North Carolina, in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Women’s Tennis Team Championships, as announced on Monday by the NCAA Division I Tennis Committee. The regional also features host Duke, which is ranked fifth nationally, and Quinnipiac.
 
The Paladins (21-6), who earned a No. 3 seed for just the fourth time in program history, will square off against the Monarchs (20-6) on Friday, May 5, at 1 p.m. at Ambler Tennis Stadium, in the seventh meeting between the two schools. The teams last met in 2005, when the Paladins defeated Old Dominion, 7-0, in a neutral match in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Monarchs lead the all-time series, 4-2. Duke will face Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. on Friday with the winners of the two matches advancing to play Saturday.
 
Furman is part of a 64-team field that will compete at regional sites May 6-7 for round one, with 32 teams advancing to the second round, which will be held May 8 at the same regional sites. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals of the team tournament are scheduled for May 19-22 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois. Individual singles and doubles play is set for May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
 
“We are thrilled to be back in the NCAA tournament,” said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. “This will be an exciting match against Old Dominion. We have a lot of respect for their coaches and their program and are excited to get to Durham to get started.”
 
Furman, which secured the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by capturing its 21st SoCon Championship, is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament.
