SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG outfielder Pres Cavenaugh and The Citadel right-handed pitcher Cameron Reeves have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games from May 9-15. The selections, the first for both Cavenaugh and Reeves, are made by the league office.
Cavenaugh hit .647 and posted a .700 on-base percentage in his four appearances for the Spartans last week, tallying 11 hits and nine total runs with one double and two home runs in UNCG’s midweek contest against Coastal Carolina and the Spartans’ weekend conference series against ETSU. The sophomore started the week by going 5-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the Spartans’ 14-2, seven-inning win over the Chanticleers on Wednesday, May 11, with his five hits marking a new single-game career high. In UNCG’s 5-2 series-opening loss to the Bucs on Friday, May 13, Cavenaugh went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored before going 2-for-4 again the following day with one run scored and three RBIs in the Spartans’ 15-2 victory. Cavenaugh concluded the weekend by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, four runs scored and two home runs in UNCG’s 16-11 series-finale win on Sunday, with his two long balls tying a single-game career high that he previously set in the 2021 campaign against Wofford. For the week, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native drew three walks, totaled 10 RBIs and boasted a 1.059 slugging percentage.
UNCG (25-26, 9-9 SoCon) closes out the 2022 nonconference slate on Tuesday, with the Spartans traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a 6 p.m. ET game against NC State before traveling to Cullowhee, North Carolina, for a three-game SoCon set against Western Carolina (25-25-1, 9-8-1 SoCon) starting Thursday.
Reeves started and threw eight innings in his only appearance on the mound for The Citadel last week, allowing only one unearned run and two walks in the Bulldogs’ 5-4, 10-inning victory over Samford on Saturday. The senior hurler, whose performance kept The Citadel in the game and helped the team win in extra innings, recorded four strikeouts and allowed seven hits in the victory to conclude the contest with a 0.00 ERA.
The Citadel (24-26, 4-14 SoCon) hits the road for its next four games, traveling to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on Tuesday, May 17, for a nonconference game against College of Charleston at 6 p.m. ET before traveling to Johnson City, Tennessee, for a conference series against ETSU (35-13, 12-3 SoCon) on May 19-21.
