SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI’s Jordin Poindexter and The Citadel’s JP Caglione have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Mercer’s Ariel Raggs and ETSU’s Tya Blake claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from March 30 to April 5.
 
VMI’s Poindexter competed at the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Friday and Saturday. The senior from Richmond, Virginia, turned in a pair of top-five finishes in the sprints, placing fifth in the 100-meter dash in 10.70 seconds and fourth in the 200-meter dash in 21.42. Poindexter’s 200m time leads the league this season, while both times rank in the top 40 in the Southeast Region. Poindexter also ran the anchor leg on VMI’s 4x100-meter relay, which finished eighth in 42.79.
 
The Citadel’s Caglione competed at East Carolina’s Bill Carson Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina, on Friday and Saturday. The graduate student from Viera, Florida, won the hammer throw with a school-record and SoCon-leading toss of 58.99 meters and took second in the shot put with a heave of 15.55 meters. Caglione’s effort in the hammer is good for 13^th in the Southeast Region this season.
 
Mercer’s Raggs ran at the UAB Invitational, which was held in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday and Saturday. The freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, won a pair of events at the meet, claiming the 400-meter hurdles and running a leg on the Bears’ victorious 4x400-meter relay. Raggs ran the 400mH in 1:04.16, the second-fastest time in the league this season and good for a victory margin of more than two seconds. She ran the third leg on the relay, which clocked 3:58.10 to win the event by more than five seconds. Mercer’s time in the event ranks third in the league this season.
 
Competing at High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina, Blake, a freshman, turned in a couple of collegiate personal bests Saturday. The rookie from Lynchburg, Virginia, finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.74 meters and took ninth in the long jump with a mark of 5.41 meters. Blake’s triple jump mark ranks fourth in the SoCon and 23^rd in the South Region this season, while her long jump effort is good for seventh in the SoCon. Blake also ran in the 400-meter hurdles, placing 15^th.
