SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond’s Dalton Young and Griffin Kology have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games March 29 to April 4, after leading the Spiders to a win over No. 2 Virginia. The awards are selected by the league office.

Richmond scored a 17-13 win over the defending national champion Cavaliers on Saturday, knocking off Virginia for the first time in program history. The victory marked the Spiders’ highest ranked win ever and snapped Virginia’s 73-game winning streak against in-state opponents, handing the Hoos their first loss to a Commonwealth squad in nearly 45 years.

Young scored a game-high seven points on the day, netting four goals and assisting on three others. The junior attackman from Chantilly, Virginia, scored twice in the first quarter, once in the second and once in the fourth, with his final strike a man-up goal. He then assisted on the next Richmond score to give the Spiders some breathing room at 16-12 with just under eight minutes left. His other two assists game in the first half.

Young was also named to the USILA Team of the Week on Tuesday.

Kology registered a career-high six ground balls and added a caused turnover as Richmond held Virginia three goals under its season average. The freshman defenseman from Chatham, New Jersey, was also tasked with marking Tewaaraton Award Watch List member Connor Shellenberger, holding him to just a goal and three assists on the day, 2.25 points below his seasonal average.

Richmond (6-3, 1-0 SoCon), which entered the national rankings this week at No. 17 in the USILA/Dynamic, Inside Lacrosse and Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine polls, visits No. 12/11/9 Jacksonville (9-2, 1-0) for a ranked-on-ranked SoCon battle on Saturday at 11 a.m.
