SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Carson Williams and Megan Marvin have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s outdoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while Samford’s Jed Sisco and Alex Webb claimed the men’s and women’s field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from April 20-26. They are the final weekly selections of the season.
Williams competed at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday, finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase invitational in a personal-best time of 8:42.83. The sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, who was running the event for the first time this season, now leads the SoCon and ranks sixth in the Southeast Region and seventh on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List. His time ranks him 17th on the overall NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.
Furman’s Marvin earned her second weekly award of the outdoor season thanks to her effort Friday at the Virginia Challenge. The sophomore from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, turned in a personal-best time in the 1,500-meter run, finishing sixth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the invitational event with a time of 4:14.97. That time lowers her SoCon-leading mark and ranks fourth in the Southeast Region, 11th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 17th on the overall NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.
Samford’s Sisco claimed his second honor in three weeks after his performance Saturday at the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The sophomore from Morrow, Ohio, cleared a personal-best 5.25 meters in the pole vault, taking second place at the meet and extending his SoCon lead in the event. Sisco moved up to fourth in the South Region, 17th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 37th on the overall NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.
Samford’s Webb also competed at the Crimson Tide Invitational on Saturday, finishing seventh in the javelin throw with a school-record and personal-best heave of 50.52 meters. The sophomore from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, extended her SoCon lead in the event to nearly 4.5 meters and now ranks eighth in the South Region, 13th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 24th on the overall NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.
The Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Shauna Yelton Field at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
