SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ellie Schoppe has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from April 12-18, the conference announced on Tuesday. The weekly award is the final one of the season.
 
Schoppe won at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles as the Paladins finished their regular season with a 5-2 win at ETSU in a battle of SoCon unbeatens to clinch the regular-season league title.
 
In doubles play, Schoppe and Julia Adams, the 32^nd-ranked tandem in the country, topped Laylo Bakhodirova and Alejandra Morales, 6-4. The Furman duo finished 6-0 in league action.
 
In singles play, the sophomore from Stuart, Florida, clinched the victory and the SoCon regular-season title with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Morales to finish 7-0 in SoCon singles play.
 
Schoppe’s award is her league-record fifth of the season, breaking a tie with former teammate Katarina Kozarov, who won four times last season, and Furman’s Ansley Speaks (2017).
 
Top-seeded Furman (18-6, 7-0 SoCon), ranked No. 41 nationally, takes on No. 8 seed Mercer (6-16, 0-7) on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
 
Also nominated: Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg (Samford), Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga), Kata Foldeak (Western Carolina) and Liz Massie (Wofford).
