NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Furman leads the 2022 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship by two strokes and the Paladins’ Sophia Burnett holds the individual lead with play suspended by darkness Sunday. The tournament is being played at Barefoot Landing Resort’s par-72, 6,004-yard Dye Course.
 
The tournament was originally scheduled for 18-hole rounds on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but with inclement weather in the forecast for Monday, the decision was made to start the second round Sunday afternoon after the completion of the first. Just three teams, The Citadel, Samford and Western Carolina, were able to complete their second rounds. For the remaining six teams, round two will not resume before 9 a.m. Monday.
 
Furman and Mercer shared the team lead at 5-over-par 293 after round one, with defending team champion ETSU three strokes back at 8-over 296. The 45^th-ranked Paladins were 10-over in the second round with players on holes 9-12 when play was halted, with the Bears two strokes back.
 
Burnett shot a 2-under 70 in round one to hold a one-stroke lead over a trio of players at 1-under, including teammate Anna Morgan and ETSU’s Sera Hasegawa and Chattanooga’s Dorota Zalewska. Burnett is at even-par through 12 reported holes in the second round and leads Mercer’s Kate Song, who shot even-par 72 in round one and is even through 12 holes in round two, by two strokes.
 
The Paladins, who are seeking their sixth SoCon title since 2015, have three players inside the top 10. Joining Burnett are Morgan, who is tied for sixth at 3-over, and defending SoCon individual champion Sarah-Eve Rhéaume, who is tied for ninth at 5-over after a 3-over 75 in round one.
 
Mercer has a pair of players in the top 10 in Song and Mikayla Dubnik, who is tied for ninth at 5-over after shooting even-par 72 in the opening round. With players through holes 9-12, the Bears are 12-over in round two.
 
Wofford also has a two in the top 10 in Becca Earl, who is tied for fourth, and Nicole Amos, who is tied for sixth. Earl shot a 5-over 77 in round one but has the low round so far in the second, shooting 3-under through 15 holes to jump 22 spots up the leaderboard. Amos completed her second round, following up her first-round 74 with a 1-over 73 in round two for a 3-over 147. The pair has helped the Terriers move up two spots in the team standings from round one into third.
 
ETSU is in fourth place, eight strokes back of Wofford, with Hasegawa tied for fourth at 2-over. She is 3-over through 12 holes in her second round. Western Carolina is in fifth at 34-over 610 after rounds of 304 and 306, moving up one spot from its first-round standing. Kayleigh Baker sits alone in eighth place at 4-over 148 after following up her first-round 77 with a second-round 1-under 71.
 
Chattanooga follows in sixth, two strokes back of Western Carolina. Zalewska is alone in third at 1-over through 15 holes in round two.
 
UNCG is seventh, paced by Tara Bettle in 18^th at 7-over. Samford is eighth and shot 311 in round one and 306 in round two. The Bulldogs see Kelley Topiwala and Sophie Membrino tied for 19^th at 8-over 152.
 
The Citadel rounds out the team scoring in ninth at 654 after rounds of 319 and 335. The Bulldogs’ Megan Ikeda is tied for ninth at 5-over 149 after a 3-over 75 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two.
 
After Monday’s completion of round two, round three will be played Tuesday as scheduled. Live stats can be found here.
