GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Maycin Brown of the UNC Greensboro softball team was named the Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Tuesday.
The Summerville, South Carolina, native was most selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Week on Monday and was named the SoCon Player of the Month for February.
According to the NFCA, Brown is the first from UNCG to receive the honor. Brown was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference first team to begin the season.
Brown hit a perfect 8-for-8 at the plate with six RBIs and eight runs over three games. Six of her eight hits went for extra bases. Not only did she bat 1.000, but she also had a 2.500 slugging percentage. She hit a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch adding to her .900 on-base percentage.
In UNCG’s first game against Mercer, where the Spartans run-ruled the Bears 15-4, on Saturday, Brown went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, one RBI and two doubles and was hit by a pitch and had a sacrifice fly. During game two, she went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, four RBIs, and a home run to assist in a 12-4 five-inning victory. Sunday, Brown went 3-for-3 again with three runs, one RBI, a double, and a home run, falling a triple shy of the cycle.
Her .435 batting average and 40 hits currently lead the team.
She is currently ranked in the top 10 in 12 conference categories: first in batting average (.435) and total bases (69), second in hits (40) and doubles (11), third in slugging percentage (.750), on-base percentage (.518), and runs scored (24), fourth in total plate appearances (110), sixth in walks (13), seventh in assists (51), eighth in at bats (92), and ninth in hit by pitch (4).
Nationally, the junior is ranked in the top 100 in seven categories: 12th in doubles (11), 37th in hits (40) and total bases (69), 38th in batting average (0.435), 42nd in doubles per game (0.37), 46th in on-base percentage (.518), and 83rd in slugging percentage (.750).
The Division I Player & Pitcher of Week awards must be nominated by member head coaches and are voted on by the NFCA's Division I Top 25 Committee, which consists of one head coach representing each of the 32 NCAA DI Conferences.
“First of all, this is exciting!” Brown said. “I’m incredibly honored to get this and the fact that I get to play for one of the best programs in the country is even better. I wouldn’t have been able to earn this without my amazing coaches and the best teammates around.”
The Spartans welcome nonconference Radford for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
