HPU’s Nolting, JU’s Hinton named SoCon Players of the Week

Both pick up honors after big wins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point’s Asher Nolting and Jacksonville’s Colin Hinton have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games March 22-28. The awards are selected by the league office.

Nolting had a career day in the Panthers’ 18-8 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday, scoring five goals and handing off six assists for a career-best and program-record 11-point day. The fifth-year attackman from Greenwood Village, Colorado, had a hat trick in the first quarter alone, also assisting on three goals as High Point jumped out to a 7-2 lead after 15 minutes of play. Nolting added a goal and an assist in the second quarter before capping his scoring with a goal and two more helpers in the third. His 11 points tie for third on the SoCon’s single-game list, while his 35 assists this season are already good for sixth in a season in league history. Nolting pushed his career point total to 319, moving him from 14th to 11th in NCAA Division I history.  The weekly honor is the eighth of his career, leaving him one back of the SoCon record held by Richmond’s Benny Pugh.

Hinton anchored a defense that allowed just four goals Saturday, as Jacksonville rolled to a 25-4 win over St. John’s. The graduate defenseman from Kensington, Maryland, had a career-best four caused turnovers on the day, marking his fourth career game with at least three. Hinton also picked up three ground balls on the afternoon as the Dolphins, who lead the SoCon in ground balls per game (33.30), caused turnovers (85) and goals against average (9.31), held an opponent under five goals for the second time in three outings.

Nolting and Hinton will square off Saturday when High Point (5-4) and No. 9 Jacksonville (8-2) open league play against each other in Jacksonville, Florida, at noon.

Other offensive nominees: Max Waldbaum (Jacksonville) and Ryan Dunn (Richmond).

Other defensive nominees: Paxtin Powell (Hampton).
