SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Anna Morgan has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 23-March 1. The selection is made by the conference office.
Morgan, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, was alone at the top of the leader board after Monday's opening round of the 10th edition of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,281 yard Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The tournament is the first all-women's regular season collegiate golf tournament to be aired live on Golf Channel.
Morgan teed off on No. 10 and birdied No. 13 and No. 16 to make the turn at even par.?She then recorded four birdies on the front nine, including birdies on three of four holes from No. 5 to No. 8, to finish the round at 2-under-par 69. Morgan held a 1-stroke lead over a group of six players who were tied for second place at the tournament.
She was tied for 13th in a field of 90 players, including 13 top-50 players, after the second round of play Tuesday. Morgan recorded three birdies on the front nine to finish the day with a 75.?She entered Wednesday's final round five strokes back of leader Calynne Rosholt (-3) of Arizona State, who leads the field with rounds of 70-69-139. ?
This marks Morgan’s third weekly honor of the season and fourth of her career.
Furman will wrap up play the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Wednesday and will return to action on Monday, March 7, at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Florida.
