SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford utility player Mary Katherine Tedder and UNCG right-hander Morgan Scott have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for games from March 7-13. The awards are selected by the league office.
 
Tedder hit .615, slugged 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .667 for the Bulldogs last week in a pair of games each against Austin Peay and Jacksonville State at the JSU Invitational in Jacksonville, Alabama. The graduate student from Hoover, Alabama, had three multi-hit games and collected an extra-base hit in each contest. She reached base three times in her tournament opener against APSU on Thursday, walking twice and hitting a two-run triple in the top of the seventh to give Samford a 4-2 win. She was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single in a 4-1 setback to Jacksonville State later in the day. On Friday, she was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored in a 6-4 loss to the Governors before closing her tourney with a single, a double and a run scored in a 5-1 loss to the host Gamecocks.
 
Scott, the reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Year, went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA last week. The junior from Irmo, South Carolina, twirled two complete games at UNCG’s Spartan Classic, allowing just one earned run in each one. She opened her week Thursday with a 6-2 win over Michigan State in which she allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk in seven innings of work, striking out five. The next day against St. Francis (Pa.), she struck out 10 against no walks, allowing one run on six hits in the Spartans’ 3-1 win. Scott’s 10 Ks matched her season high and put her in double digits for the 12th time in her career. For the week, she allowed just three extra-base hits and held opposing batters to a .241 average in improving to 9-4 on the season.
 
Samford (11-12) welcomes Colgate for a three-game set this weekend, with two games on Friday and the series finale on Saturday. UNCG (15-8) is back in action at Charlotte on Wednesday before playing a doubleheader at Elon on Saturday and hosting the Phoenix for a single game Sunday to complete the three-game series.
