JU’s Greiner, Millican named SoCon Players of the Week

Dolphins sweep awards after wins at No. 14 Denver, Air Force

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville’s Jacob Greiner and Luke Millican have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 22-28. The awards are selected by the league office.

Greiner had a career week for the Dolphins, scoring 13 points in wins at No. 14 Denver and Air Force. The redshirt sophomore attackman scored a career-high six goals to lead the Dolphins past the Pioneers on Saturday, 11-9. A day later, he matched that career high and added an assist for a seven-point day in JU’s 15-9 win over the Falcons, their former SoCon foes. Greiner, an Exton, Pennsylvania, native, notched a .600 shooting percentage on the week and totaled six ground balls and a caused turnover in the wins. Greiner also earned a spot on the USILA Division I Team of the Week.

Millican picked up both wins in goal for the Dolphins, notching 11 saves and allowing just nine goals in the win over Denver, his second over a ranked opponent this season (No. 2 Duke, Feb. 13). He added four ground balls and a caused turnover against the Pioneers. On Sunday, the graduate student from Southlake, Texas, had 13 saves allowed just seven goals, also scoring what is believed to be the first goal by goalkeeper in program history. For the week, he fashioned an 8.44 goals against average and a .600 save percentage in 114 minutes of action.

Jacksonville, which has won five straight to move to 5-1 on the season, is up to No. 11 in the USILA/Dynamic Men’s Coaches Division I Poll, No. 8 in the Inside Lacrosse and Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine rankings. The Dolphins return to action Sunday when they host Utah for the Jacksonville Lacrosse Classic. The game will air live on CBS Sports Network at 6 p.m.

Other offensive nominees: Michael Ippolito (High Point) and Lance Madonna (Richmond).

Other defensive nominees: Trejan Cannon (VMI) and Devin Craven (Richmond).
