SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ellie Schoppe has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Feb. 1-7, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Schoppe earned her second straight weekly honor on the strength of a 2-0 week in singles play. The sophomore from Stuart, Florida, earned the Paladins’ lone point in a 6-1 setback at home to No. 12 Duke on Saturday, downing 26th-ranked Emma Jackson at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9). Later in the day, she earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Laura Marti at No. 2 singles in Furman’s 6-1 win over Charleston Southern.
Schoppe and doubles partner Julia Adams fell to Duke’s top duo 6-0 and were leading Charleston Southern’s top pair 3-2 when the match was abandoned.
Furman (5-3) welcomes Marshall (5-2) on Saturday at 9 a.m. to wrap up a three-match homestand.
Also nominated: Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg (Samford) and Jacy Smith (Western Carolina).
