SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point’s Brayden Mayea and Jacksonville’s Luke Millican have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games to date this season. The awards are selected by the league office.
High Point’s Mayea scored five goals to share game-high honors in the Panthers’ season-opening 21-13 setback at No. 2 Maryland on Saturday. The sophomore attackman from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, logged a perfect shooting percentage on the afternoon, scoring on all five of his attempts. Mayea netted his first two goals just 43 seconds apart to open the second-quarter scoring. He added two more goals in the third quarter before finishing off his day with one more in the fourth for his fourth career game with five or more goals. He also added three ground balls on the afternoon against the 2021 NCAA runner-up.
Making his debut for Jacksonville after spending four years at North Carolina, Millican faced 45 shots and logged a career-best 17 saves in the Dolphins’ 11-8 loss to No. 16 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. The graduate transfer goalkeeper from Dallas, Texas, allowed just 11 goals in 60 minutes of action and turned in a .607 save percentage in his first start since Feb. 10, 2018, against Furman. Millican also grabbed a pair of ground balls and had one caused turnover against the Blue Jays.
High Point (0-1) and Jacksonville (0-1) both face tall tasks again this weekend. After hosting Colgate on Friday, the Panthers visit defending national champion and top-ranked Virginia on Sunday. The Dolphins visit Duke, which won twice last week to slip past Maryland and into the No. 2 slot in this week’s USILA/Dynamic Coaches Poll.
Other offensive nominees: Max Waldbaum (Jacksonville) and Sean Goldsmith (Mercer).
Other defensive nominees: Ashton Wood (Mercer).
