WCU’s Robinson named SoCon Player of the Week

Graduate guard posted career high in points, notched program’s third DI triple-double

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina guard Nicholas Robinson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6 after averaging 28.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game on the week. The award is selected by the league office.

Robinson opened his week Wednesday by scoring a career-high 37 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in Western Carolina’s 87-84 win over ETSU, which snapped the program’s 14-game losing streak to the Bucs. In addition to surpassing his previous career high by nine points, Robinson added six assists and went 13-for-23 from the floor (.565), including hitting five 3-pointers on the day.

The graduate student from Chicago, Illinois, followed that up by posting just the third triple-double in Western Carolina’s Division I history Friday, scoring 19 points, matching his career high with 13 rebounds and dishing off a career-best 10 assists in the Catamounts’ 76-69 loss at VMI. He also added a blocked shot and a steal and nearly had the triple-double in the first half alone with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists at the break.

Western Carolina (9-15, 3-8 SoCon) is back in action Monday when it hosts UNCG (13-10, 5-6) at 7 p.m. The Catamounts then hit the road to face league-leading Chattanooga (19-5, 9-2) on Wednesday and Wofford (14-10, 6-6) on Saturday to cap a spurt of three games in six days.
