SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday afternoon, the match-up between the Wofford and Gardner-Webb women's tennis teams was decided by the final singles match at Reeves Tennis Center. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the doubles point and then took three of the singles matches – two of which went to three sets – for the 4-3 win.
In doubles, the Runnin' Bulldogs took the first match 6-0 at the No. 1 position. Breda Brennan and Briana Wilbur earned a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles to tie the match, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took No. 2 doubles by a 6-3 score to earn the doubles point.
The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up the first singles point at the No. 1 position, which was the first loss of the year for Wofford freshman Lily Woods (5-1). Brianna Wilbur earned the first point for the Terriers, taking a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win at the No. 5 position. Liz Massie tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at the No. 3 singles position as she rallied to win the final two games.
A 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win by Emely Kahrs at the No. 6 position gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead in the match. The matches at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles both went to three sets to decide it. The Runnin' Bulldogs tied things up with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. In the final match at the No. 4 position, Elin Hellberg defeated Georgia Fischer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to claim the win for Gardner-Webb.
Wofford (4-3) will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, this weekend for a Friday match at Belmont and a Sunday match at Vanderbilt. The Runnin' Bulldogs are now 2-4 on the season.
