SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ellie Schoppe has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Feb. 15-21, the conference announced on Tuesday.
 
Schoppe went 1-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as the Paladins fell at Wake Forest 5-2 and defeated Virginia Tech at home, 4-3.
 
Against the Demon Deacons on Saturday, Schoppe teamed with Julia Adams to down No. 22 Samantha Martinelli and Casie Wooten, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. The sophomore from Stuart, Florida, then topped Anna Campana at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
 
The following day against the Hokies, Schoppe and Adams cruised to another win at No. 2 doubles, downing Erika Cheng and Rita Pinto by a 6-1 count. In singles play, Schoppe fell to Pinto at No. 2, 6-2, 7-5.
 
The honor is Schoppe’s third of the season.
 
Furman (7-4) is back in action at the Blue Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama, on Friday and Saturday.
