SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Kerim Hyatt has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 15-21, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Hyatt was a combined 3-1 last week, winning both of his singles matches and going 1-1 in doubles play. In Friday’s 6-1 loss at Kennesaw State, Hyatt picked up the Mocs’ lone point with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Harvey Conway at No. 3 singles. He and Simon Labbe fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-1.
Against Lipscomb on Saturday, the junior from Charleston, South Carolina, clinched the 4-3 win for Chattanooga with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, he and Kaisei Kuroki topped Pedro Uribe and Maksim Bogdanovich by a 6-3 score at No. 3 to clinch the point for the Mocs.
Chattanooga (2-6, 0-0 SoCon) opens SoCon play this Friday when it hosts The Citadel (1-7, 0-0) at 1 p.m. The Mocs then welcome Presbyterian for a noon bout on Sunday.
Also nominated: Frazier Rengifo (ETSU), Jamie Connel (Furman) and Ashe Ray (Wofford).
