UR’s Lanchbury, HU’s Powell named SoCon Players of the Week

Both players set league records during the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond’s Ryan Lanchbury and Hampton’s Paxtin Powell have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 15-21. The awards are selected by the league office.

Lanchbury became the career goals leader for both the SoCon and the Richmond program on Saturday, as he scored four in the Spiders’ 18-4 win over Marist to push his career total to 126, surpassing former teammate Teddy Hatfield as the previous record-holder for both marks. The graduate attackman from Burlington, Ontario, Canada, also added two assists on the day and now trails Hatfield by just six points for the program record for total points. Lanchbury currently sits third in SoCon history in that category with 221. For his efforts, Lanchbury was also named to the USILA Division I Team of the Week on Tuesday.

Hampton’s Powell had two busy days in goal as the Pirates took the field for their first official games since March 2020. The senior goalkeeper from Bradenton, Florida, matched the SoCon’s single-game saves record in his 2022 debut Saturday, stopping a school-record 23 shots in a 17-5 setback to Mount St. Mary’s, weathering 60 shots and posting a .575 save percentage on the day. Powell was even better on Monday in a 15-6 nonconference setback to league foe VMI, facing 66 shots and logging 27 saves to make the league record his own. He posted a .643 save percentage on the day.

Richmond (1-1) which is receiving votes in the national polls, returns to action Saturday when it visits Towson at noon, while Hampton (0-2) visits Bellarmine on Saturday at the same time.

Other offensive nominees: Max Waldbaum (Jacksonville), Daniel Shumake (Mercer) and Scout Ripley (VMI).

Other defensive nominees: Tucker Garrity (Jacksonville), Collin Kelley (Mercer) and Jared Chenoy (Richmond).
