SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro designated player Jordan Gontram and Chattanooga right-hander Brooke Parrott have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for games from Feb. 14-20. The awards are selected by the league office.
Gontram hit .636 and slugged 1.273 with five RBIs to power UNCG to a 4-0 weekend at its own Spiro Classic. The graduate student from Wake Forest, North Carolina, hit safely in all four games, notching two hits in each of the first three. She opened her weekend with a 2-for-3 showing in a 10-1, five-inning win over Rider on Friday, launching a solo home run in the third inning and stroking a two-run single in the fourth. The following day, she got the scoring started with another solo homer in the second and added an RBI single in the sixth inning of the Spartans’ 7-3 win over Georgetown. She had a single and a double in UNCG’s 8-1 win over Rider on Saturday before capping her weekend with a single in Sunday’s 10-1, six-inning win.
Chattanooga’s Parrott went 2-0 with a pair of saves and a 0.74 ERA as the Mocs hosted the Chattanooga Classic over the weekend, highlighted by a perfect game against Radford on Saturday in which she struck out four in a 4-0 win. The junior from Harrison, Tennessee, opened her weekend with a 3-2 win over SIUE on Friday in which she allowed two runs on five hits and a walk and struck out five. After turning in just the 13th no-hitter and fifth perfect game in program history on Saturday, Parrott came on in relief twice on Sunday, first working two scoreless innings in an 8-6 win over SIUE to nail down her first save of the season and later coming in for three innings of scoreless relief in an 8-2 win over Purdue Fort Wayne to secure her second save. For the week, she allowed just 10 hits and three walks, striking out 11, in 19 innings of work over four appearances.
UNCG (5-3) visits NC State on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. tilt before returning home to host the UNCG Invitational from Friday-Sunday. Chattanooga (5-5) returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Frost Classic from Friday-Sunday.
