Samford’s Samantha Nanere named SoCon player of the week

Sophomore went a combined 3-0 in pair of Bulldog wins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Samantha Nanere has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Feb. 8-14, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Nanere went a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles play as the Bulldogs earned wins over Western Kentucky and UT Martin on the week. In a 4-3 road win over previously undefeated WKU on Saturday, the sophomore from Bandung, Indonesia, picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Paola Cortez at No. 3 singles and teamed with Sofia Zaprianov for a 6-3 victory over the Lady Toppers’ No. 3 doubles tandem as Western Kentucky was denied the doubles point for the first time this season.

A day later in the Bulldogs’ 7-0 home win over UT Martin, Nanere moved up one slot in the singles lineup to claim a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sina Albersmeier at No. 2. She and partner Lauren Waddles were up 4-3 at No. 3 doubles when the point was clinched and the bout abandoned.

Samford (4-3) hits the road for its next two contests, visiting Middle Tennessee on Friday at 1 p.m. CT and South Alabama on Sunday at noon CT.

Also nominated: Madison Dillon (Furman), Erika Barquero (UNCG), Luzia Obermeier (Western Carolina) and Lily Woods (Wofford).
