SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ellie Schoppe has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Jan. 25-31, the conference announced on Tuesday.
In singles play, the sophomore went 1-0 at flight three singles. In her match against No. 83-ranked Ivana Corley of Oklahoma on Saturday, Schoppe lost the opening set 6-2, won the second set 6-3 and was leading 4-3 in the third set when it went unfinished. The following day, the native of Stuart, Florida, made quick work of Nebraska’s Isabel Gallego, winning 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, Schoppe and her partner Julia Adams went 1-0 at the top flight. The pair downed Corley and her partner and sister, Carmen, 7-5. The Corneys were ranked No. 1 nationally in the preseason ITA poll. Against the duo from Nebraska, the match was tied at 4 but went unfinished.
Furman (4-2), which fell 4-1 to No. 17 Oklahoma and beat Nebraska by the same score, hosts No. 6 Duke on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Paladins’ lone contest of the week.
Also nominated: Laylo Bakhodirova (ETSU), Mary Courville (Mercer), Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg (Samford), Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga) and Lily Woods (Wofford).
