SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Tierra Hodges has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Jan. 25-31 after averaging 24.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of conference wins. The award, Hodges’ third of the season and second straight, is selected by the league office.
The native of Covington, Georgia, tallied a game-high 27 points, just one off her career high, and a game-high 11 rebounds, adding a pair of assists and a pair of steals in a 68-54 win over ETSU on Thursday. Two days later in a 63-50 win over Chattanooga, the fifth year netted 22 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, both game highs, again adding two assists and two steals.
For the week, Hodges shot 50 percent from the floor (19-of-38), and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-14) and played all but one total minute. Hodges, who is seventh nationally in rebounding, is one of two players averaging a league-best 17.8 points per game, while she leads the league in rebounding (11.8 per game) and has recorded double-doubles in eight of her last nine games and a SoCon-best 13 times this season. In conference play, she’s averaging 22.2 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game.
After a pair of home games, Furman (11-9, 4-2 SoCon) heads on the road for a pair of contests this week, playing at Western Carolina (6-15, 0-7) on Thursday, Feb. 3, and at UNCG (6-12, 2-3) on Saturday, Feb. 5, before welcoming UNCG on Monday, Feb. 7, in a rescheduled contest.
