Mercer's Wayenburg named SoCon Player of the Week

Senior went 4-0 at No. 1 singles, 4-0 at No. 1 doubles

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Lucas Wayenburg has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 25-31, the conference announced on Tuesday.
 
In singles play, the senior played in the top spot in all four matches and picked up four wins as Mercer went 4-0 with victories over Alabama A&M (7-0), Young Harris (6-1), Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (6-1) and Emmanuel (7-0). Against Alabama A&M on Saturday, Wayenburg swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0 before picking up a 6-2,6-4 win against Young Harris’ top player later that afternoon. The following day, he added a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over ABAC’s No.1 before earning a 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 win against Emmanuel’s top player later in the afternoon, giving him four wins in two days.
 
In doubles action, the native of Velauz, France, and partner David Georgadze, playing in the No. 1 spot, won 6-3 and 6-2, respectively, against Alabama A&M and Young Harris. The duo collected a 6-1 win over ABAC’s top pair and a 6-2 win later that afternoon against Emmanuel’s No. 1 duo.
 
Mercer (4-1) hosts Stetson on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Bears’ lone contest of the week.
