Mercer’s Dougherty named player of the week

Graduate forward set a new career high versus FGCU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Jaron Dougherty has been named Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Dec. 20-26 after leading the Bears in scoring and rebounding against Florida Gulf Coast. The award is selected by the league office.

Dougherty started and played 38 minutes in Mercer’s lone contest last week as the Bears fell, 91-81, to the third-ranked mid-major squad in the nation, FGCU, on Wednesday, Dec. 21. The graduate student from Buford, Georgia, scored a game-high 32 points, pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and dished out one assist in the game. Dougherty, a preseason all-conference selection, was 14-for-19 (.737) from the field, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range, against the Eagles. Dougherty’s 32 points were just the fourth time this season that a SoCon player has scored 30 or more points in a game, joining her teammate Amoria Neal-Tysor, ETSU’s Jiselle Thomas and Samford’s Andrea Cournoyer.

Mercer (4-7) travels to Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Dec. 29.

Also nominated: Jiselle Thomas (ETSU), Akira Wiggins (UNCG), Andrea Cournoyer (Samford) and Raven Thompson (Chattanooga)
