SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford women’s basketball player Helen Matthews has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Dec. 14-20. The selection is made by the conference office.
Matthews averaged 9.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as the Terriers picked up wins over Bellarmine and UNC Asheville on the week.
The Kaiapoi, New Zealand, junior had seven points and seven rebounds in Wofford’s 69-56 win at Bellarmine on Saturday, adding four steals, a blocked shot and a steal in 26 minutes of play.
Against UNCA on Monday, Matthews scored 12 points and pulled down another seven boards, adding an assist and a steal in 22 minutes of action. The Terriers downed the Bulldogs 79-67 for their ninth win in their last 10 games.
Matthews, an international affairs major, carries a 3.70 GPA.
Wofford (9-3), visits Tennessee on Tuesday, Dec. 27, before wrapping nonconference play on Saturday, Dec. 31, with a home game against Erskine.
Also nominated: Nigeria Harkless (Mercer women’s basketball) and Lincoln Heck (Chattanooga wrestling).
