SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga graduate student Jake Stephens has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 21-27 after averaging 22.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on the week. The award is selected by the league office.
Stephens turned in double-doubles in both of his contests on the week. He opened with 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-66 setback to in-state foe Lipscomb on Wednesday, adding three assists. Stephens went 5-for-8 from the floor (.625), hitting both of his 3-point attempts, and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
The Bunker Hill, West Virginia, native topped that effort in Saturday’s 69-66 win over Murray State, scoring a season-best 27 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, matching his season high. Stephens was 9-for-17 (.529) from the floor and 4-for-7 (.571) from 3-point range. He converted five of his six free-throw attempts (.833) and added three more assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
For the week, Stephens shot 56.0 percent from the floor (14-for-25), including a 6-for-9 showing (.667) from beyond the arc, and was 11-for-12 from the free-throw line (.917). With 201 career 3-pointers and a .384 career percentage from long range, the 7-0 center is the SoCon’s active leader in both categories.
Chattanooga (3-3) visits Tennessee Tech on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to Boiling Springs, North Carolina, for a contest at Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 2 p.m.
