STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 12 seed UNC Greensboro men's soccer team played to another 1-1 draw Sunday night at Cagan Stadium against No. 5 seed Stanford in the third round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, before upsetting the Cardinal in penalty kicks 3-1.
 
With the win, UNCG will host a quarterfinal matchup. This will be the first quarterfinal appearance in Division I history for the Spartans.
 
Marco Afonso scored the Spartans’ goal during regulation in the 21st minute, with an assist from J.C. Ngando. Afonso's goal was his eighth on the season, while Ngando's helper was his 14th.
 
Cam Cilley of Stanford scored with an assist from Teegan Cilley in the 26th minute.
 
Like they did after a 1-1 draw against Ohio State in the second round on Nov. 20, the Spartans substituted Isaac Briner in net once again for the penalty kicks, and he stopped the first three attempts from the Cardinal.
 
Basile Marc scored the first for UNCG, while the next one was missed, and then Ethan Conley put away the second. Emmanuel Hagan came up and netted the winner to advance after a 3-1 score in penalty kicks.
 
The Spartans will now host No. 13 seed Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 3. Time is TBD.
