SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman fifth-year senior Mike Bothwell has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 14-20 after averaging 20.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game on the week. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Bothwell, who earned all-tournament honors at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic in Charleston, South Carolina, opened the tournament with a season-best 26 points and six rebounds in a 73-68 setback to Penn State on Friday. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native also recorded four assists and a steal against no turnovers. He was 10-for-20 from the floor and converted three of his 10 3-point tries. He went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
 
The following day, Bothwell poured in 23 points and pulled down two boards with five assists and two steals, again with no turnovers, in an 82-77 loss to Old Dominion. Bothwell shot 60 percent from the floor (9-for-15) and 57.1 percent from 3-point range (4-for-7) on the day.
 
In Sunday’s contest against South Carolina, Bothwell just missed a double-double with 11 points and a career-best eight assists as the Paladins earned a 79-60 win, the SoCon’s first over a Power 5 conference opponent this season. Bothwell collected five rebounds and had two more steals on the day.
 
For the week, Bothwell shot 51.1 percent from the floor (23-for-45) and 40.9 percent from long range (9-for-22). He dished off 17 assists to just three turnovers and averaged 1.7 steals per game. He was also 5-for-6 from the free-throw line (83.3 percent) on the weekend.
 
Furman (3-2) hosts Tusculum at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.
