Notes
• Samford will try to wrap up an undefeated Southern Conference slate when it hosts Mercer on Saturday in a battle of ranked foes, while Chattanooga visits Western Carolina for the Ingles Southern Conference Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates.
• Elsewhere, rivals Furman and Wofford clash with the Paladins still seeking a share of the SoCon title and VMI hosts The Citadel for the Military Classic of the South. ETSU visits Mississippi State to close its season.
• Four SoCon squads are nationally ranked this week. Samford is ranked No. 9 in both the AFCA FCS Coaches’ top 25 and Stats Perform FCS Top 25, while Furman is 13th in the coaches’ poll and 12th in the Stats Perform poll. Chattanooga is ranked No. 17 and No. 15 in the respective polls, while Mercer is No. 16 and 19.
. Samford has already clinched at least a share of the SoCon title and the league’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. The Bulldogs’ current eight-game winning streak is the longest in school history and their seven conference wins are the most in program history. Samford is seeking just its second 10-win season ever and first since 1991.
• If Samford loses and Furman wins, the Paladins would clinch a share of the SoCon title, their first since 2018 and their league-record 15th.
• Chattanooga running back Ailym Ford is the first player in program history with three 1,000-yard seasons. Teammate Devonnsha Maxwell has 36.5 career sacks, just 0.5 back of the SoCon and UTC record of 37.0 set by Davis Tull from 2011-14.
• Western Carolina earned a walk-off win over ETSU on Nov. 12, getting Richard McCollum’s 33-yard field goal as time expired for the 20-17 win. A win over Chattanooga would give the Catamounts a 4-4 league mark and consecutive seasons of at least a .500 SoCon record for the first time since 2014 and 2015.
• Mercer saw wide receiver Devron Harper record 192 receiving yards on a career-high 14 catches in its 23-13 setback to Furman last week. Harper notched 264 all-purpose yards, just one game after logging a program-record 293.
• Furman quarterback Tyler Huff accounted for 369 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in last week’s 23-13 win over Mercer.
• After an 0-6 start, Wofford has gone 3-1 since, including last week’s 34-16 win over VMI. With a win over Furman on Saturday, the Terriers would finish with a 4-4 mark in league play, its best since winning the league at 7-1 in 2019.
• The Citadel rolled to a 66-0 win over Virginia-Lynchburg on Nov. 12, posting its first shutout and scoring its most points since beating Davidson 69-0 in 2015.
• VMI is seeking to win the Silver Shako for the third time in four seasons. The Keydets topped The Citadel in 2019 and spring of 2021 before the Bulldogs won last year.
• Playing in his final home game, ETSU’s Jacob Saylors ran for 172 yards and a TD against Western Carolina last week. Saylors now has 3,808 career rushing yards and 5,999 career all-purpose yards.
SoCon Points of Pride
• Since it began competing in FCS,
the SoCon has amassed the second-most national championships with eight. Also boasting another eight national championship runner-up finishes,
the league has 16 title-game appearances, the most among FCS conferences.
•
The SoCon prides itself on quality and depth.
• Eight of the nine current SoCon football members have participated in the FCS Playoffs with seven different schools receiving bids since 2016.
• Overall, current SoCon football members have combined for 47 total FCS playoffs appearances.
• Six of the nine SoCon teams appeared in an FCS top-25 national poll in the 2020-21 season and five of nine did so in the fall 2021 campaign.
•
The SoCon has had seven Walter Payton Award winners, two Buck Buchanan Award winners and five Eddie Robinson Award winners. VMI Coach Scott Wachenheim won the Eddie Robinson Award (FCS National Coach of the Year) in 2020-21.
•
Sixty-three former SoCon players and coaches have been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
• The SoCon had 15 FCS All-America selections in fall 2021 season. Two of them were drafted into the NFL, with Chattanooga OL Cole Strange becoming the SoCon’s first first-rounder since 1974 when he was taken 29th overall by the New England Patriots. Samford WR Montrell Washington was selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos.
•
The SoCon has been playing Division I FCS football since the 1982 season. The NCAA created two subdivisions for Division I football beginning in 1978 with the creation of I-A (now FBS) and I-AA (now FCS). The SoCon was shifted from I-A to I-AA along with the Ivy League and Southland Conference following the 1981 season, joining the Mid-Continent, Big Sky, MEAC, SWAC, OVC, and Yankee conferences, along with a number of independents, as I-AA participants.
•
The 2022 campaign is the 101st season of SoCon football. Founded in 1921, the SoCon is the fifth-oldest Division I conference.
