SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga center Jake Stephens has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 7-13 after averaging 19.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game on the week. The award is selected by the league office.
The graduate transfer from VMI and preseason SoCon Player of the Year opened his Chattanooga career with a double-double in an 85-78 setback at former SoCon member College of Charleston on Nov. 7, scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Stephens also added three assists and a pair of blocked shots on the evening.
In Chattanooga’s home opener on Thursday, Stephens scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of action as the Mocs rolled to a 93-49 win over Oakland City. The Bunker Hill, West Virginia, native went 9-for-11 (81.8 percent) from the floor and added another assist and another blocked shot.
For the week, Stephens shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the floor and went 6-for-8 (.750) from the free-throw line, averaging 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
The weekly award is the sixth of his career.
Chattanooga (1-1) visits Ole Miss on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET before kicking off a three-game home stand on Saturday with Covenant College at 2 p.m. ET.
