Notes
• The Ingles Southern Conference Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates features a pair of ranked squads, as No. 6/7 Chattanooga visits No. 24 Furman on Saturday.
• Elsewhere, Samford looks to remain perfect in SoCon play when it visits The Citadel. Mercer heads to VMI looking to bounce back after its first SoCon loss of the season and Wofford hosts ETSU looking for its second straight win after snapping a 16-game losing streak.
• Four SoCon squads are nationally ranked this week. Chattanooga is ranked No. 6 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 and No. 7 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25. Samford is No. 13 and Mercer is No. 16 in both polls, while Furman joined the Stats Perform poll at No. 24 this week and is receiving votes in the coaches’ rankings.
• Chattanooga prevailed in a battle of ranked squads last week, forcing six turnovers in topping Mercer 41-21. The Mocs were named the FedEx FCS National Team of the Week by Stats Perform and Kameron Brown was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after intercepting two passes, returning one for a touchdown. Ailym Ford ran for 123 yards to become the fifth Moc to surpass 3,000 for his career.
• Furman won its fourth straight road game for the first time since 1999 last weekend, rolling to a 41-3 win over VMI. Paladin quarterback Tyler Huff was 18-for-25 for 205 yards and a touchdown, while Furman’s defense held the Keydets to just 48 yards rushing and saw Travis Blackshear return an interception 41 yards for a score.
• Samford won a 55-45 slugfest at ETSU last week, getting 492 yards of total offense and five touchdowns from quarterback Michael Hiers, who was named the FedEx Ground FCS National Offensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform. He completed 45 of his 51 passes (88.2 percent) on the day.
• The Citadel enters Saturday’s all-Bulldog affair having snapped a four-game skid with a 34-21 win at Western Carolina last week. Sophomore quarterback Graeson Underwood dazzled in his career debut, rushing 36 times for 129 yards and a TD and completing four passes for 82 yards and two scores.
• Mercer quarterback Fred Payton threw for three touchdowns in the setback to Chattanooga, setting a program record for season TD passes with 24.
• VMI hopes to snap a five-game skid when it welcomes Mercer on Saturday. The shorthanded Keydets were without several key players due to injuries and illness against Furman, including quarterbacks Seth Morgan and Collin Ironside and All-American linebacker Stone Snyder.
• Wofford picked up its first win under interim coach Shawn Watson on Oct. 15, downing The Citadel 31-16. The Terriers scored 24 unanswered points between the second and third quarters to break open a 7-7 game and saw quarterback Jimmy Weirick for 14-for-24 for 232 yards and three TDs.
• ETSU quarterback Tyler Riddell had a career day in the loss to Samford last week, completing 25 of 43 passes for a career-high 389 yards and five TDs. Will Huzzie was on the receiving end for three TDs and 128 yards.
