Chattanooga's Cornelius named SoCon Player of the Week

Junior center averaged a double-double in lone contest

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Dec. 28 through Jan. 3 after scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in a 61-51 loss at Jacksonville State (9-3) on Dec. 30. The award, Cornelius’s second of the season, is selected by the league office.

The double-double was the fourth of the season for the junior center. Cornelius, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, played 38 minutes and went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, adding an assist and a block in the Mocs’ nonconference finale.

Chattanooga (2-13) plays at Samford on Thursday, Jan. 6, in the conference opener for both squads before the Mocs play at SoCon preseason-favorite Mercer on Saturday, Jan. 8.
