SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Ben Garner and Ty Kimberlin have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Chattanooga’s Lesley Green and Samford’s Brittany Bishop claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 19-25.
Samford’s Garner competed at the Samford Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday, taking second place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:19.00 and lowering his personal best by 13 seconds. The graduate student from Opelika, Alabama, leads the SoCon in the event this season by more than 11 seconds.
Samford’s Kimberlin competed at the Samford Multi on Thursday and Friday, also at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The senior from Olive Branch, Mississippi, finished second in the event with 5,101 points, which leads the SoCon this season by nearly 400 points and is good for 20th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. Kimberlin won three of the seven heptathlon events, claiming the 60-meter run in 7.13 seconds, the 1,000-meter run in 2:54.09 and the long jump with a leap of 7.04 meters, which also leads the SoCon this season. He is the two-time defending SoCon champion in the event.
Chattanooga’s Green was also in action at the Samford Invitational, where she finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 17:36.44, more than 26 seconds faster than her previous career low. Her mark leads the SoCon this season by 53 seconds and was well under the previous meet record of 19:19.91. The junior from Dayton, Tennessee, is the first Moc to earn a SoCon weekly indoor award since Teghan Henderson in 2016.
Samford’s Bishop competed at the Samford Invitational on Friday, winning the pole vault with a personal-best height of 3.91 meters. The junior from Clinton, Tennessee, leads the SoCon this season by more than a foot in the event and is the two-time defending SoCon champion.
