SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Evan Guzman and Samford’s Seth Wolfe have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Megan Marvin and ETSU’s Symphony Buxton claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition thus far this season.
ETSU’s Guzman claimed second place in the mile at the ETSU Track & Field Invitational on Friday, Jan. 14, in his season debut. The second-year freshman from Franklin, Tennessee, turned in a personal-best time of 4:11.79, which leads the SoCon so far. Guzman also ran the anchor leg on the Bucs’ victorious 4x800-meter relay squad, which turned in a time of 7:45.79 to win by more than 25 seconds.
Samford’s Wolfe broke a school record in his debut meet for the Bulldogs, winning the weight throw at the BSC Icebreaker in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, Dec. 3, with a throw of 19.80 meters. He also finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.15 meters. At the UAB Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham on Saturday, Jan. 15, the Atlanta, Georgia, native again won the weight throw with a throw of 18.29 meters and took 10
th in the shot put with a heave of 12.32 meters. The graduate transfer from Charleston Southern leads the SoCon in the weight throw by more than three meters, with his mark good for 35
th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
Just like she did last season, Furman’s Marvin earned the first women’s track award of the season by winning the 800-meter run, this time at the Gamecock Opener in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, Jan. 15. The sophomore from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, stopped the clock in 2:07.31, winning by nearly 8 seconds and good for the SoCon lead and No. 6 on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
ETSU’s Buxton opened her season at the ETSU Track & Field Invitational on Friday and Saturday, earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Competing for the first time in nearly two years, Buxton opened the meet with a win in the weight throw, turning in a SoCon-leading heave of 18.25 meters for her fourth collegiate title. The senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, found her way to the podium again on Saturday, finishing third in the shot put with a toss of 12.50 meters, the second-best throw in the SoCon this season.
