Furman's Sisson named Student-Athlete of the Week

Holds a 4.00 GPA; Led Paladins to win over FCS 24th ranked North Carolina A&T

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a strong performance not just on the field, but in the classroom as well, Furman’s Hamp Sisson has been named the Southern Conference Student Athlete of the Week for all competition from Sept. 1-7. The selection is made by the conference office.

The Student Athlete of the Week honor is Sisson’s second award for the week, as the junior quarterback nabbed the first SoCon Offensive Player of the Week award for the 2021 football campaign after leading the Paladins to a 29-18 victory over FCS 24th-ranked North Carolina A&T. Sisson completed 25-of-40 passes and threw for a career-high 362 yards and three touchdowns, marking the second-biggest passing total in a program history that spans 117 seasons and is three yards shy of the record set by Reese Hannon vs. Coastal Carolina in 2015. In the third quarter of the Paladins’ game against the Aggies, Sisson connected with All-American tight end Ryan Miller for an 87-yard touchdown pass, which tied the duo for the fourth-longest pass play in Furman history. The Birmingham, Alabama, native, who is a two-time captain and three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, also lends his assistance to others in need, leading a joint effort with Furman's FCA and Heller Service Corps to package 42,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger.

Sisson currently holds a perfect 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in health and exercise science.

The Paladins (1-0, 0-0 SoCon) will travel to Cookeville, Tennessee for Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech (0-1) at 2:30 p.m. in their second game of the season.

Also nominated for Student-Athlete of the week: AJ Chastonay (Belmont men’s soccer), Tyler Keltner (ETSU football), Brant Zulauf (Mercer men’s soccer), Gabriela McHugh (UNCG volleyball) Lesley Green (Chattanooga women’s cross country), Melody Mezzina (Western Carolina women’s soccer).
