The Citadel sweeps honors after strong showings at Queen City Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Sam Sharnas and Heidi Fortin have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s cross country runners of the week, respectively, for their efforts at the Queen City Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s cross country coaches and included all competition from Sept. 22-28.

Sharnas finished eighth overall and was the sixth scorer at the meet, setting a school record with a time of 24:23 in the 8K race, which saw more than 300 runners cross the finish line. The junior from Saugatuck, Michigan, helped the Bulldog men to a fifth-place finish in the 34-team field.

Fortin ran a personal-best time of 18:23 in the women’s 5K race, coming in 25th out of the 262 finishers. The junior from Ogunquit, Maine, paced the Bulldogs to a 23rd-place finish in the 32-team field.

The Citadel heads back to Charlotte’s McAlpine Creek Park, the site of the Queen City Invitational, for its next race, the Royals Challenge. That meet is also hosted by Queens University and will be contested on Friday, Oct. 8.
