Furman's Morgan advances to round of 64 at U.S. Women's Amateur

The rising junior shot a 2-under 70 in her second appearance in the event

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman rising junior Anna Morgan (+4) advanced to the round of 64 Tuesday at the 121st United States Women’s Amateur Championship, which is being held this week at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.

Morgan, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., is making her second appearance in the event after competing in 2019.  She notched a 2-under 70 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 9 in Monday’s first round then tallied a 78 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 18 in Tuesday’s second round of stroke play to advance from the field of 156 competitors.  

Match play begins on Wednesday and will continue through Sunday.  On Wednesday, Morgan will tee off at 12:10 p.m. versus Cory Lopez of Monterrey, Mexico.  The match play rounds, which will be held from 2-5 p.m. each day, will be televised on the Golf Channel or Peacock. 

Morgan tied for 16th to lead Furman at the NCAA Louisville Regional in May.  The 2021 SoCon Freshman of the Year, she was named to the All-SoCon Team and the SoCon All-Freshman Team.  The highest ranked player in the SoCon, she was ranked 49th in the final 2021 Golfstat rankings.  She led the Paladins and ranked second in the league with a 73.28 stroke average over 18 rounds this season.  Morgan, who tied for third at the Brickyard Collegiate, notched three top-10 finishes and placed among the top 20 in five out of six events this spring.

Furman golfers have a long history of success at the U.S. Women’s Amateur.  Former Paladin and LPGA Hall-of-Famer Beth Daniel claimed the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1975 and 1977, while former Furman standout Brandi Jackson claimed a runner-up finish at the tournament in 2002.  

In the last decade, many Paladins have competed in the U.S. Amateur.  Former LPGA Futures Tour star Stefanie Kenoyer qualified for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur along with former Paladin Liz Wendt, who also competed in the tournament in 2012.  Furman alum Alexa Rancourt qualified for the championship in 2011, and former Paladin Taylor Totland competed from 2014 through 2016.  Alum Jacqueline Bendrick and senior Marra Burton joined Totland in the field in 2016, and senior Natalie Srinivasan competed in the event in 2017.
