SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has hired Sean Diminick as its Assistant Commissioner for Championships, effective Sept. 7.
In his new role, Diminick primarily will be responsible for the management and coordination of SoCon championship tournaments and the league’s awards and merchandising efforts. Diminick will also oversee the production of championship event signage, hospitality, hiring of officials and student-athlete gifts.
“I’m excited to join the team at the Southern Conference and I’d like to thank Commissioner Jim Schaus for this incredible opportunity,” Diminick said. “I look forward to working with the member institutions and coaches to provide unparalleled championship experiences for our student athletes.”
Diminick comes to the SoCon from the University of Virginia, where he has worked since February 2017 as an assistant director of event management. There, Diminick has served as event manager for seven sports, supervising the operation and maintenance of multiple athletics facilities, scheduling and managing a 25-person game operations staff, and managing facility and game operations budgets. During his tenure, Diminick oversaw the commissioning of UVA’s brand-new Palmer Park softball stadium, the installation of a new turf field for the Cavaliers’ field hockey team, the resurfacing of the Lannigan Field track, and the construction of the department’s new athletic training facility. He served as meet director for the 2019 ACC Track & Field Championships and the 2017 and 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships and was the tournament manager for the 2017 and 2019 NCAA Field Hockey Championship first and second rounds. Diminick also developed, submitted and was awarded the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships host bid on behalf of Virginia.
Prior to his stint at Virginia, Diminick worked for two years at Harvard University as a finance and human resources assistant, providing general business support, including recruiting and staffing, to the athletics department. Before his time at Harvard, Diminick was an athletic events operation coordinator at Boston College for the 2012-13 academic year, handling gameday facility setup and event management for 12 varsity sports. His career in athletics began with a summer internship in athletics administration at Virginia Tech in 2011.
Diminick, an Essex Junction, Vermont, native, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University in 2008 and earned an MBA and a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012.
“Sean brings a wealth of quality collegiate events management and championship experience to our conference,” Schaus said. “His background, energy and creativity will be tremendous assets that will benefit the student-athlete and fan experience at our SoCon championships.”
