Western Carolina shortstop earns spot on second team

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina infielder Pascanel Ferreras added to his litany of postseason accolades stemming from his rookie season, earning second-team Freshman All-America honors from the pundits at D1Baseball.com on Monday. Ferreras was one of 36 first-year baseball players nationwide selected between the two honorary squads.
 
Ferreras was additionally selected Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball newspaper back on June 9 and was among a trio of Catamounts to land on the ABCA All-Atlantic Region squad on June 16. He was the only representative from the Southern Conference on the D1Baseball Freshman All-American squads.
 
A product of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Parkview High, Ferreras was a second-team All-SoCon selection at shortstop and was selected to the SoCon’s All-Freshman team following the 2021 campaign. He additionally garnered SoCon All-Tournament team plaudits after leading WCU to the championship game with seven hits including five for extra bases with three home runs and 10 RBIs at Fluor Field.
 
Ferreras batted .329 over 49 games, collecting 70 base hits including 11 doubles, two triples, and a team-leading 16 home runs, the second-most in the SoCon. He scored 56 runs to finish second on the team, while his team-leading 56 RBIs and 133 total bases led the conference. Ferreras ranked 38th nationally with a 1.14 RBIs per game average.
 
Equally as impressive for Ferreras was his performance in the field. Starting every game at shortstop, Ferreras recorded 129 assists and 75 putouts while turning a SoCon-leading 38 double plays, helping the Catamounts rank ninth nationally with a 0.96 double plays per game average.
 
D1Baseball’s Freshman All-America teams only considered true freshmen who did not compete in the shortened 2020 campaign.
