SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has hired Jasmine Washington as its Director of Creative Services, effective July 1. In that role, Washington primarily will be responsible for enhancing brand awareness of the SoCon through graphic design and social media.
 
Washington spent the 2020-21 academic year as an intern in the SoCon’s Media Relations Department, where she was the primary media relations contact for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, wrestling, rifle, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse and baseball. She will retain media relations duties for women’s golf in her new role.
 
Washington helped craft the league’s social media strategy and created graphics for the league during her intern year. She also served as chair of the marketing subcommittee on the SoCon Racial Equity and Justice Task Force in 2020-21, where she led the conference’s first-ever unity campaign and developed and implemented the Alfred White Trailblazer Recognition.
 
The Woodbridge, Virginia, native graduated in May 2020 from the University of Maryland, where she double-majored in public relations and criminology/criminal justice. A member of the Alpha Lambda Delta and Communication honor societies and a recipient of a 2019 Barack Obama Presidential award, Washington was as a media relations intern for the Terrapins, serving as the primary contact for the track & field and cross country programs. In that role, she created the programs’ official media guide and helped increase the programs’ Instagram followers by 1,000.
 
Washington also wrote feature stories on Maryland football players, contributed to social media accounts for other Terp programs and assisted with the 2019 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis and at the NCAA Championship first and second rounds hosted by Maryland.
 
Washington, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, also completed public relations/communications internships at West End Strategy Team in Washington, D.C., and the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism in College Park, Maryland. She was also the Public Relations and Media Marketing Chair for Maryland’s chapter of the NAACP, for which she later served as president.
