SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its May athletes of the month Friday, highlighting excellence among four student-athletes across two sports during the month.
 
BASEBALL
Player
Brooks Carlson, Samford, 2B, Jr., Mobile, Ala.

• Led Samford with a .418 batting average, totaling nine doubles, five home runs and 25 RBI in 16 games
• Tallied at least one hit in 14 games and had multiple hits in nine contests
• Recorded a monthly-high four hits in the Bulldogs’ first round win over Mercer in the Southern Conference Baseball Championship, including a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave Samford a 10-8 win
• Opened the month with a hit in six-straight games and recorded a career-high seven RBIs against VMI on May 7
• Member of the 2021 Southern Conference All-Tournament Team

Pitcher
Jack Snyder, Western Carolina, RHP, Sr., Chicago, Ill.

• Made six appearances in the month including three starts, posting a 2-1 record with one save
• Finished with a 2.40 ERA over 30.0 innings of work, striking out 26 batters
• Tossed his first career complete game, working a career-long nine innings in a road win at The Citadel where he struck out a career-best nine batters
• Earned his second victory of the month in striking out five over 6.0 innings against top-seeded Wofford in the opening game of the SoCon Baseball Championship
• Pitched 3.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief against the Terriers to earn the save for Zach Franklin, eliminating top-seeded Wofford from the SoCon Baseball Championship

SOFTBALL
Player
Maycin Brown, UNCG, INF, So., Summerville, S.C.

• Helped UNCG to an 8-3 overall record and 5-1 mark in SoCon play as the Spartans won the 2021 regular season championship and locked up the No. 1 seed in the SoCon Softball Championship with a series sweep in the final week of the regular season before winning the 2021 SoCon Softball Championship and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament
• Hit .387 with 12 hits, five of which were home runs, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored
• Named the Southern Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player after 5-for-10 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBIs in the Spartans’ three wins on their home field on May 13-15
• Went 3-for-6 in UNCG’s two NCAA tournament games, finishing 1-for-3 against ACC Champion Duke and going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored in the season finale against Western Kentucky
• Selected as one of four Second-Team All-Conference infielders

Pitcher
Morgan Scott, UNCG, RHP, So., Irmo, S.C.

• Made nine starts in UNCG’s 11 games (8-30, finishing with a 6-3 mark to lead the SoCon Champion Spartans
• Had a 2.02 ERA in the month of May, allowing just 17 earned runs in 59 innings pitched
• Tallied 54 strikeouts to just 18 walks
• Threw six complete games and pitched at least six innings in each of her nine appearances
• Named the SoCon Pitcher and Freshman of the Year and was a selected to the Southern Conference Softball Championship All-Tournament Team
