ORLANDO, Fla. – Fourth-ranked Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina eked past Furman's Julia Adams and Katarina Kozarov, 2-6, 7-6(2), 11-9, Tuesday in the round of 16 at the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
 
The Paladins took an easy 6-2 victory in the first set. The Tar Heels rebounded in set two, building a 5-4 lead with set point, before Furman turned it on to claim not only that game but the next one to forge a 6-5 advantage. UNC won the next game to push the score to 6-all and force a second-set tiebreaker, which the Tar Heels won, 7-2.  
 
With the contest tied at one set apiece, the teams played a deciding 10-point tiebreaker. Furman manufactured a 4-2 lead and maintained the two-point advantage at 8-6. North Carolina came back to tie the breaker at 8-8 before Kozarov attacked the net to give Furman match point, 9-8. The Tar Heels put together three straight attacks at the net to claim the next three points and the tiebreaker, 11-9.
 
Kozarov and Adams, who earned the league's automatic bid and currently rank 40th nationally, ranked as high as 16th during the 2021 season and tallied a 20-3 dual match record at flight one, including a 5-1 SoCon mark. The duo defeated 11th-ranked Ally Bojczuk and Julia Lilien of Notre Dame, 7-6(6), 6-3, Monday in the opening round of the 2021 national tournament, claiming the Paladins' first victory in the NCAA doubles championship.
