SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford, which took two of three from Mercer last week to secure the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases, swept this season’s final player of the week honors as designated hitter Brennen Dorighi and right-handed pitcher Elliot Carney have been named player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games from May 17-23. The selections are made by the league office.
Dorighi started in all three games against Mercer and hit .636 with four RBIs, one double, a home run and a walk. In the first game on Thursday, he tallied three hits, including a solo home run in the fifth inning, and three RBIs. On Friday, Dorighi had two hits and an RBI in game one of a doubleheader and went on to record two hits and a run scored in the second game. The junior from Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, led the team this week with 11 total bases, seven hits and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Carney became the second student-athlete this season to earn pitcher of the week honors three times after his performance against Mercer, which helped lead Wofford to the SoCon Red Division title, its first regular-season title in program history, and the top SoCon winning percentage in the league. In the second game of the doubleheader on Friday, Carney shut out the Bears in the first seven innings with only five hits allowed. He did not issue a walk in the game and tallied nine strikes to total a league-leading 101 on the season, making him the ninth player in school history to reach 100 strikeouts. Carney started in all four of the Terriers’ conference shutout wins this season and closed out the regular season as the SoCon leader in strikeouts, ERA (2.71) and opposing batting average (.186).
No. 1 seed Wofford (35-19, 21-9 SoCon) will open the conference championship against No. 4 Western Carolina (26-19, 14-11) on Thursday, May 27, at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the first game will move on to face the winner of No. 2 Samford (32-22, 20-10), the Blue Division champion, and No. 3 Mercer (35-20, 18-9), who play on Thursday, May 27, at 7 p.m.
