INDIANAPOLIS – Twenty-five Southern Conference student-athletes were selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions, as the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced the participants Thursday morning.
Those 25 SoCon student-athletes will participate in a combined 19 events at the East Preliminary, which will be hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, from May 26-29. The qualifiers out of the East and West regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.
Furman and Samford lead the way for the SoCon programs with nine total participants each between their men’s and women’s teams.
Paladin senior Gabbi Jennings is the third seed in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, while classmate Ryan Adams is seeded fifth in the men’s 1,500-meter run.
For Samford, which swept the SoCon Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Maggie Johnston will represent the Bulldog women in the discus and Tally Wilson in the pole vault, while seven Samford men earned nods, including Michael McMahan in both the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles and Justin Stuckey, the No. 7 seed in the high jump.
Wofford is sending three student-athletes to the meet, with Isaiah Ellis competing in both hurdles alongside Samford’s McMahan. The Bulldogs’ Titus Moore also earned a nod in the 110-meter hurdles, giving the league three participants in that event.
The Citadel (Sam Blumer, pole vault), ETSU (Phelani Maduwa, 800-meter run), VMI (Gavin Jenkins, 3,000-meter steeplechase) and Western Carolina (Shon Pratcher, long jump) will also be represented at the meet.
Four SoCon student-athletes will compete in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Jenkins leading the way as the No. 16 seed.
